Getting started
Run the bee on your Mac
Get the diabetic-smart helper running on your own machine in a few minutes — free, private, and offline. Nothing leaves your house. We just help you carry the day. 🐝
What you'll need
A Mac (Mac Mini, MacBook, iMac) with about 8 GB+ of memory and 3 GB of free disk. The compact DiabeticDaily-4B model is a ~2.7 GB download and runs comfortably on a Mac Mini. Pick either path below — both keep everything 100% on your machine.
Option A — Ollama
- Download Ollama from ollama.com and drag it into your Applications folder.
- Open Terminal (press ⌘-Space, type "Terminal"), paste this line, and press Return:
ollama run hf.co/SwarmandBee/DiabeticDaily-4B:Q4_K_M
- It downloads the model once (~2.7 GB), then you can talk to the bee right in the terminal. Try: "Give me a quick win for today." Type
/byeto exit.
Option B — LM Studio
- Download LM Studio from lmstudio.ai and open it.
- In the search box, type SwarmandBee DiabeticDaily-4B and download the Q4_K_M GGUF file.
- Load the model and start chatting in the app. That's it — a private bee, running on your Mac.
Got a bigger Mac?
The same family comes in three sizes — the bigger the machine, the bigger the brain. DiabeticDaily-9B and DiabeticDaily-27B are on Hugging Face too. Browse them all at huggingface.co/SwarmandBee.
Put the dashboard on your desktop & phone
Once your box is running, its dashboard is a web app at http://<your-box-ip>:8081 (e.g. your NAS on your home network). You can pin it like a native app — bee icon and all — no app store needed.
Desktop — Chrome · Brave · Edge (any OS, incl. Ubuntu)
- Open the dashboard in your browser.
- Menu → More tools → Create shortcut… (Brave/Chrome), or Apps → Install this site as an app (Edge).
- Check "Open as window" → Create. It lands in your apps with the 🐝 icon — pin it to your dock/taskbar or drag it to the desktop.
iPhone / iPad — Safari
- Open the dashboard in Safari.
- Tap Share (□↑) → Add to Home Screen.
- Name it, tap Add — it opens fullscreen, like a real app.
This works on your home network. To reach it from anywhere — privately — set up Tailscale next.
Reach your box anywhere — privately
Your box stays off the public internet — your records never leave home, by design. To reach the dashboard when you're away, use a private VPN: Tailscale. It gives your devices an encrypted private line straight to your box, and it is never exposed to the internet.
- Install Tailscale on your box — Synology: Package Center → Tailscale; Linux:
curl -fsSL https://tailscale.com/install.sh | sh. Thentailscale upand log in. - Install the Tailscale app on your phone and laptop, and log into the same account.
- Get your box's private address:
tailscale ip -4 # a 100.x.y.z address
- Use that address for the dashboard from anywhere:
http://100.x.y.z:8081. Install it to your home screen / desktop with the Tailscale address and it works home and away.
🔒 The right way: a private tailnet, encrypted end-to-end. Never expose a medical dashboard to the public internet with a plain port-forward or public tunnel.
What this is — and what's coming
✅ What you get today: the bee's brain — a diabetic-smart helper that educates and organizes, running entirely on your Mac. No cloud, no account, no data leaving your house.
🛠️ What we're still building: the full LocalDiabetic box — your records, reminders, supplies and care notes wired into the helper with a simple dashboard. That part isn't a one-click download yet, and we're not in the app store yet. We won't pretend otherwise.
🐝 Want the whole thing? We're setting up our first members by hand and learning from every one. Tell us you're in — we'll help you stand it up, and you'll shape what we build next.
General education, not medical advice. The bee helps you organize and prepare — it never diagnoses or changes your care. Your records stay on your machine; for an emergency, call 911.
